Obviously we recommend that you learn English up to a very high level and then you will never need any translating, only somebody to proof read (check/correct) your own text.
However this is often not the case. Many people are simply not good enough at English to write or speak in an appropriate manner.
There is also the factor of time, translating is very time consuming. It takes a lot longer to speak and write in a second language compared to your first language. The meaning can also easily be obscured.
For these reasons translation services are necessary. There are three important factors which you must consider when you need a translation doing:
1. How many words? Obviously it is not the same translate a short email or a copy of “War and Peace”. It is a question of time.
2. Time. To do a good translation time is fundamental. It is very easy to do a loose, quick translation which simply gets the meaning across. However the key to a good translation is not simply a question of meaning but making it sound good. The more time available the better the translation.
3. Target Audience. Who is going to read/listen to your translation. In particular marketing translations must be of a very high standard, possibly thousands of people are going to read it! If the text does not sound good you will sell less. On the other hand if the text is only for you personally a different type of translation will be required.
People underestimate the importance of a good translation. For example there are many web pages with simply awful texts which make no sense and give a horrible impression of the company. This shows a company that has very little attention to detail, not the type of company you would like to do business with. If you need a translation do it properly.
