Unless you have a particularly Strong reason to start learning English, signing onto an English course is a little like going to the gym. You start full of enthusiasm and start learning/getting fit very quickly. However after three or four months your progress becomes harder and you slowly lose enthusiasm.
YOU MUST CONTINUE!
If not you will have wasted your time and money.
Probably you will then try again the following year and start right at the beginning again.
This process of going around in circle and never really improving is particularly common in lower level students. This is very good business for the Academy in question and very bad business for you.
Make sure you have a very clear objective about what you want to achieve from your English classes. “Improve my English” is a far too loose and vague objective which does not really have any meaning. Similarly “speak and understand English” is equally meaningless and vague.
Set yourself a time limit, for example, I want to be able to answer the telephone confidently within one year.
Exams are another very good way of objectively measuring progress. For example, I want B2 level English (Cambridge First Certificate) within two years.
It is so very important to have these objectives clear in your mind before you sign onto any English course and then work towards them. If you do not do so it is very easy to fall into the trap that you are not improving fast enough and therefore you become frustrated and leave English until you try again next year.
Like many things in life, learning English can be hard work when you begin but you must pass through this phase as it is a fundamental part of the learning process.
